Paver Patio Materials — What You Need and How Much
A 12 × 14 ft patio — 168 square feet, about the room a table and four chairs needs — takes roughly 832 4×8 pavers, 2.9 tons of compacted gravel base, 0.52 yd³ of bedding sand, 3 forty-pound bags of polymeric joint sand, and 52 linear feet of edge restraint held down by about 52 spikes. Getting there means digging 7⅜ inches down and moving 3.8 cubic yards of soil out of the way. What a paver patio is made of

Excavate
How deep you dig is not a decision — it is the sum of everything that goes back in: the compacted base, one inch of bedding sand, and the thickness of the paver itself. For a patio base and a standard 60 mm paver that comes to 7⅜ inches below the finished surface, and for a base built to carry a car it is 11⅜. Dig wider than the patio too: the base has to run about six inches past the paver edge on every open side so the edge restraint has something solid to be spiked into.
Two things happen in this hole that nothing later can fix. Cut a slight, consistent fall away from the house while you are digging, because every layer above copies the shape of the subgrade. Then compact the exposed subgrade before anything goes back in — the base can only be as stable as the ground it rests on, and a soft spot left here will show up as a dip in the pavers two summers from now.
Nothing to choose here. The depth is set by the layers above it, and the spoil volume follows from your dimensions.

Lay separation fabric
A geotextile sheet between the subgrade and the base keeps the two materials from mixing. Without it, every time the patio is wet and loaded, fine soil pumps up into the voids between the stones; the base loses the point-to-point contact that makes it rigid, and the patio starts settling unevenly a few seasons in.
It matters most on clay and anywhere that stays damp, which is most yards. On clean, free-draining sand it is closer to cheap insurance. Overlap the seams — the figure below already includes ten per cent for that — and run the fabric up the sides of the excavation rather than cutting it flush.
Roll widths vary by brand — set this to the roll you can actually buy. The area figure is what matters; the roll length is that area divided by your width.
Spread and compact the base
The base is the patio. Everything above it is a wearing surface; this is the part that spreads the load and stays put. ICPI guidance puts a compacted aggregate base at four inches for pedestrian patios and walkways and six to eight where vehicles drive, which is why switching this page to Cars doubles the stone and the digging together.
Place it in two- to three-inch lifts and compact each lift before the next. A single four-inch dump compacted from the top leaves the bottom half loose, and that loose half is what eventually moves. Crushed stone is sold by weight, so the tonnage below converts your volume at a typical density — the supplier's scale ticket is the number that actually governs what arrives.
Loose stone loses volume when it is compacted. Ordering the in-place volume is the honest arithmetic; adding fifteen per cent is the common rule of thumb for making sure you finish at depth. The range people use is ten to twenty per cent.

Screed the bedding sand
One inch of coarse washed concrete sand, screeded flat, and never more than an inch and a half. ICPI Tech Spec 17 caps it because a thick sand layer behaves like a cushion: the pavers press into it under load and rut, and no amount of joint sand fixes that afterwards.
Screed it; do not compact it, and do not walk on it once it is flat. The two common substitutions are stone dust and mason's sand, and both are wrong for the same reason — they hold water and break down. The layer does not get thicker for a bigger patio, so this is the one quantity on the page that scales with area alone.
Nothing to choose here either. The depth is fixed at one inch by the standard, not by the size of your patio.
Sand is sold by volume or by weight depending on the yard. Both figures are the same material; the tonnage uses a typical washed-sand density.
Lay the pavers
Paver counts come from the coverage of the shape you pick — a 4×8 Holland covers four and a half per square foot, a 12×12 covers one — multiplied by your area, plus a waste factor for the cuts. Ten per cent suits a rectangular patio in a running bond. A herringbone turned at forty-five degrees, or any curved edge, produces far more offcuts, so use fifteen.
Order the whole job in one delivery. Pavers are made in batches and cured in batches, and a replacement pallet bought three weeks later can be a visibly different colour in daylight. Work off the laid field rather than off the sand, and pull from several pallets at once so any batch variation is spread across the patio instead of sitting in one corner.

Install the edge restraint
This is the part beginners leave out and the reason most failed patios failed. There is no mortar in a paver field; what stops it spreading under foot traffic, furniture and frost is a restraint pinned around the perimeter holding every joint closed. Lose the edge and you lose the interlock that makes hundreds of separate pavers behave as one surface.
Plastic or aluminium restraint sits on the compacted base against the outside course and is spiked down at roughly one spike per foot — which is the reason step 1 asked you to run the base past the paver edge. Fit it before the joint sand goes in, so the final compaction beds the pavers against something that is already fixed.
The figure below is the full perimeter — a free-standing patio, restrained on all four sides. If one side butts a house wall or an existing slab, that side needs no restraint: subtract its length.
Restraint is sold in fixed lengths and some packs include their own spikes. Check the pack before you buy spikes separately.
Sweep in the joint sand and compact
Sweep polymeric sand into the joints, blow or brush the surface completely clean, then run the plate compactor over the pavers with a protective mat so the sand drops and the pavers set down into the bedding layer. Top the joints up, sweep clean again, and water it exactly as the bag instructs — the wetting is what activates the binder.
Coverage depends on how wide your joints are, which is why the bag quotes a range rather than a number; the figure below uses the middle of that range, so check your own bag before buying the last one. And be thorough about clearing the surface: polymeric sand left on the paver faces when you wet it sets there, and it is a haze you cannot sweep off afterwards.
Nothing to choose here. Coverage is a property of the sand and your joint width, not of the patio.
A 40 lb bag covers roughly 40 to 100 sq ft depending on joint width. This uses the 70 sq ft midpoint — narrow joints will go further, wide joints will not.

Everything the job takes, including the parts you will size somewhere else. None of these is arithmetic we can do for you, and leaving them off a materials list is how a two-day patio becomes a four-day one.
- A plate compactor. Rented by the day and used three separate times: on the bare subgrade, on every base lift, and over the finished pavers with a mat. There is no hand tool that substitutes for it on a patio this size.
- Screed rails and a straight edge. Two lengths of one-inch pipe laid in the sand and a straight board pulled across them is the standard way to get a flat, uniform one-inch bed.
- A way to cut pavers. An angle grinder with a diamond blade, or a hired splitter. Cutting concrete pavers releases crystalline silica, so eye, ear and respiratory protection are not optional.
- Layout kit. String line, stakes, a long level and a tape, to set the finished height against the house and hold your fall consistent across the whole patio.
- A utility locate. Call 811 in the US a few working days before you dig. Free, and separate from any permit.
- Extra base depth on poor ground. Soft, wet or heavy clay subgrade wants more than the standard pedestrian base. How much more is a judgement about your site — ask locally, or over-build it.
- Drainage, if the ground holds water. A French drain or a downspout line running under the patio has to be planned and dug before the base goes in, not after.
- Sealer. Optional. If you use one, it goes on after the joints have cured for as long as the manufacturer states.
- Repairing the edge. You will finish with a strip of bare, disturbed soil around the patio. Topsoil and Sod have calculators of their own.
Paver patio questions
Do I need a permit to build a paver patio?
Usually not for a patio at ground level that is not attached to the house and does not change where water goes — but the rule is local. Some jurisdictions cap how much of a lot can be hard surface, some have setback limits from a property line, and a homeowners association may have its own say. One call to your building department settles it. Separately, and regardless of any permit, call 811 for a utility locate before you dig. It is free.
Can I lay pavers over an existing concrete slab?
Yes, if the slab is sound, sheds water, and you can live with the finished surface rising by roughly the thickness of the paver plus the bedding layer. The slab stands in for the excavation and the base, so those two steps drop out. What does not drop out is the edge restraint: there is no gravel to spike into, so it has to be a type that fastens to concrete. If the slab is cracked, heaving or holds puddles, take it out — pavers laid over a moving slab move with it.
Can I build the patio right up against the house?
Yes, and it is the common case. Two things change. The finished paver surface has to sit well below the siding, the sill plate and any weep holes in brick, and it has to fall away from the wall so water leaves rather than pooling against the foundation. And the house side needs no edge restraint, because the wall is the restraint — subtract that side's length from the perimeter figure this page gives you.
What actually happens if I skip the edge restraint?
The patio spreads. A paver field has no mortar holding it together, so the only thing resisting the outward push of foot traffic, furniture and freeze-thaw is the restraint pinned around the perimeter. Without it the outer course leans out, the joints behind it open, the joint sand washes down into the gaps, and the interlock that makes the whole field act as one surface is gone. It is the cheapest part of the job and the most common reason a patio needs relaying.
Can I build a paver patio on clay or soft ground?
Yes, and that is exactly the situation the separation fabric is for: it stops fine soil from pumping up into the stone and destroying the base. On soft, wet or heavy clay subgrade the base usually needs to be deeper than the standard pedestrian figure, and how much deeper is a judgement about your site rather than a formula. If the ground stays wet, deal with the drainage before you build over it.
Does a paver patio have to slope?
Yes. A patio needs a consistent fall so surface water runs off it and away from the house rather than standing on it or draining toward the foundation. You cut that fall into the subgrade at the excavation stage and every layer above follows it. You cannot add slope later at the paver stage by varying the sand, because the bedding layer has to stay at a uniform one inch.
